The Movie
This year, we are celebrating 80 years of freedom. The average Dutch person thinks of 5 May, but it was not until 15 August 1945, with the Japanese surrender in the Dutch East Indies, that the Second World War finally came to an end for the entire Kingdom of the Netherlands. In 2025, it will be 80 years since the Dutch East Indies were liberated from the Japanese and the Indonesian war of independence began. The impact of the former colony on our current country is still underrepresented, and Indonesian influences are now an integral part of our society. That is why, on the occasion of 80 years of freedom, the documentary Traces of the Indies is being re-released. In this film, historian Hans Goedkoop takes the viewer on an independent and visually appealing journey through 400 years of shared history between the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies. In search of an answer to the question: How Indonesian is the Netherlands? Many aspects of the Indonesian and colonial influences on Dutch society as a whole are discussed: the Indo people, the Moluccans, but also the veterans and the Totoks, the plantations and the boarding houses.
