80 Years of Freedom: Leo Smit and Dick Kattenburg

  • Date: 20 September
  • Time: 16:00 - 17:15
  • Location: Nieuwe Kerk, Den Haag

This year the Netherlands celebrates 80 years of freedom. After so much time, this may seem self-evident, but as global tensions rise, we realize how fragile this freedom truly is. In this concert you will hear the story of two composers, Leo Smit and his gifted student Dick Kattenburg. During the Second World War they were increasingly oppressed. Their music was banned, and ultimately both were murdered by the Nazis.

Program
Leo Smit Sextet for piano and winds
Leo Smit Flute Sonata, part 2
Leo Smit Suite for piano, fragments
Leo Smit Trio for clarinet, viola and piano, part 1
Dick Kattenburg Flute Sonata, part 2
Dick Kattenburg Blues & Lied ohne Worte (arr. for ensemble)
Dick Kattenburg Escapades for two violins
Dick Kattenburg Suite for violin and piano*

*World premiere

Eighty years after liberation, we cast new light on their music. As a tribute, we present the world premiere of a recently discovered work for violin and piano by Dick Kattenburg – a moving testimony to a talent silenced too soon.
