In Dakar, two young lovers dream of leaving Senegal for a glamorous life in Paris. As they scheme to escape, they confront the contradictions between tradition, modernity, and the illusions of postcolonial aspiration.
On October 1st, Touki Bouki will be introduced by Dr. Benjamin Fogarty-Valenzuela of Leiden University. Educated at Princeton, Dr. Fogarty-Valenzuela is a photographer and ethnographer with deep expertise in societies of the Global South.
BEYOND CONQUEST: Gems of Postcolonial Cinema
From September 24 to October 8, in collaboration with Leiden University College The Hague, we present three gems of postcolonial cinema. Spanning 50 years of independent filmmaking from Chile, Senegal, and Colombia, these films explore the legacies of colonialism and the ongoing struggles for freedom and justice.
