Foute Erfenis (Wrongful Legacy)

The post-movie discussion takes place in Dutch.

In Foute Erfenis (Wrongful Legacy), the grandchildren of people who were members of the NSB or SS during World War II speak out. Some of them suffer from what is known as intergenerational or transgenerational trauma: experiencing trauma as a result of choices and events that a previous generation experienced or caused.

Grandchildren Tanja, Xander, Bettina, Michael, and an anonymous source talk about the actions of their grandparents. They committed treason, actively hunted Jews and communists, and caused death and destruction in the name of the occupying forces. Feelings of shame and, in some cases, the urge to serve society as compensation for what their grandparents did, are common denominators among the grandchildren.

Additional trauma often stems from the internment of NSB members shortly after the war. Because no one knew what to do with the children of NSB members, they were locked up with them and often mistreated or even abused. It is this generation that raised the main characters in the film. An upbringing that revolves around keeping up appearances, and above all, an upbringing that revolves around silence. Silence, and camouflaging a ‘wrongful legacy’.

On December 21st, we welcome Michael Schuling, one of the main characters from the documentary and chairman of the Recognition Working Group Foundation. After the film, he will engage in a discussion with the audience.
