A new restoration of Ben Verbong’s classic film about resistance fighter Hannie Schaft (Renée Soutendijk). The film is based on the true story of Hannie Schaft, a young student from Haarlem who, during the Second World War, gave up her law studies to put her ideals and her sense of justice into practice. She joined a resistance group that carried out attacks on collaborators. Hannie Schaft was arrested a month before the liberation and executed by firing squad.
The digital restoration was carried out by STORM (Jack Kuipers) under the supervision of Theo van de Sande, the film’s cinematographer. He used a 4K scan of the original camera negative from the Eye collection as his starting point. After a search lasting several years, Ben Verbong rediscovered the original negative, which had been thought lost, in 2025. “There were rumours that it had been destroyed, but I couldn’t believe that,” he told L1. Thanks to a tip-off, Verbong eventually discovered that the negative had been stored in a Dutch warehouse all along. It was then moved to Eye and scanned in 4K for restoration.
