How can we build a digital future we can trust?
A future where systems do what we expect of them — and where we can limit the damage when they don’t? During his inaugural lecture on 20 November, Gerard Hoekstra, Professor of Network and Systems Engineering Cyber Security, will share his vision on this pressing challenge.

Opportunity and vulnerability — technology as our support
From electric bikes to energy management systems: digital networks and systems are everywhere. At home, at work, and across society, we are surrounded by complex, interconnected technologies. New innovations create opportunities that were once unthinkable — from autonomously navigating drones to algorithms that assess medical conditions. Digitalisation keeps our society running and strengthens our economy’s competitiveness. At the same time, crime is becoming increasingly digital: the very technologies we depend on can also be misused.

During his inaugural lecture, Gerard will outline the research focus and future plans of his professorship. He will demonstrate how applied research can contribute to creating reliable networks and systems — for people and for organizations.
