Indigenous literacies
- Date: 21 November
- Time: 17:00 - 19:00
- Location: KB nationale bibliotheek
This is a Dutch-spoken event.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Suriname’s independence. At the KB, we are celebrating this milestone with a series of special events and gatherings. On 21 November, Suriname’s Indigenous communities will take centre stage. During this unique event, you will hear stories about the rich culture and history that—despite limited documentation—remain very much alive today.
What to expect?
You can look forward to a vibrant and inspiring gathering featuring:
-
Personal stories and cultural contributions from Wasjikwa, Amby Cheneylise, Sherlien Sanches, Yasmin Namavar and Anuana Maro
-
Reflections on colonial sources: how were Indigenous peoples portrayed, and how do they tell their own stories today?
-
Inspiring examples of the deep connection with nature, rituals, and their contemporary significance
Admission is free, but registration is required. Want to make sure you have a spot? Reserve your ticket now via the ticket shop.
This gathering was made possible thanks to:
Stichting Wasjikwa, meaning “our home” in the Arawak language, works to raise awareness of Suriname’s Indigenous communities by sharing their history, culture and knowledge, and by organising Indigenous workshops.
Amby Cheneylise is a multidisciplinary artist who translates personal experiences and processes into Rhythm, Art & Poetry.
Sherlien Sanches works at KIEN as an advisor for international heritage cooperation. She supports cultural exchange between heritage communities in Suriname, Indonesia, India and the Netherlands and helps make previously unidentified intangible heritage visible.
We also have several surprises in store to give you an authentic cultural experience.
Ferdy Karto curated the programme. He is a poet, writer and theatre maker. His poetry collection Het firmament tussendoor was nominated for the C. Buddingh’ Prize in 2022.
