Generation Peace

What does it mean to be safe - and for whom does it come naturally?

We live in a time when security is anything but straightforward. As war continues and tensions rise around the world, decisions will be made in June at the NATO summit in The Hague that will impact our common future.

The conversation about peace and security is often held at a high level, in terms of defense, alliances and international interests. But what does security mean when viewed from the everyday lives of young people? When do you feel safe, and when do you not? What do you see as conditions for a society in which there is room for differences, for freedom, for dialogue?

On June 19, you will have the opportunity to explore those questions with other young people at the Generation Peace event, organized by the NJR Working Groups Young in Europe and UN Youth. It's a moment of conversation, reflection and ideation. Not to formulate “the truth,” but to provide input from experience and involvement for a youth-oriented vision of peace and which we take with us towards the NATO summit.

What to expect?

Panel discussion with:

• Mark Zellenrath

• Director of the Directorate of Multilateral Institutions and Human Rights

• David Lensen, Military work student Defensity College

• Lotte van den Boom, Chair of Netherlands Atlantic Youth

• Expert from PAX

    • The Complain-But-Touch Wall: Where do you feel unsafe? And what needs to be better?
    • Letter to NATO: What would you like to pass along to decision-makers?
    • Photo exhibit: Youth images about safety, hope, insecurity
    • Question fire: direct conversation with experts
    • Concluding reflection: compilation of insights and experiences in a manifesto

    Why now?

Not because you must have all the answers right away.
But because your questions, doubts, concerns and ideas matter.
And because the conversation about peace and security is only complete when young people are part of the process.

    For whom?

For young people (±16-30 years) who want to speak out, listen, doubt, participate or are just curious. Whether you are active in a youth council or have never had your voice heard, you are welcome!

The number of spots is limited, so sign up soon!

Safety starts not with conference tables, but with people. With what they are experiencing, missing, and hoping for. That's why this talk is from and for you.
