With De Rechtvaardigen (The Righteous), Cappella Amsterdam, the Berlage Saxophone Quartet, and writer Jan Brokken tell the story of Dutch consul Jan Zwartendijk, who risked his life for the freedom of others.
Zwartendijk saved thousands of lives, including Polish Jewish men, women, and children who fled to Lithuania and desperately sought a way to leave Europe. He provided visas that enabled Jews to travel on the Trans-Siberian Express from Lithuania through the Soviet Union to Vladivostok, then on to Japan and America, Shanghai, and other countries, thus saving them from the Holocaust.
An impressive story that will also focus on the rescued Leo Adler and his Bella Hamburg, who reached New York after a six-year flight but remained homesick for their original continent and language. Through a recitation by Jan Brokken, interwoven with music for choir and saxophone quartet, this through-composed concert shows how the good deeds of one person can save thousands of lives.
