50 Years of Surinamese Independence – Haagse Hogeschool

  • Time: 16:15 - 18:00
  • Location: Haagse Hogeschool, Speakers' Corner

Open conversation about identity, freedom, and the future
What and why?

In 2025, we celebrate 50 years of independence of Suriname (called Srefidensi), a country where diverse cultures and communities have lived together and influenced each other for centuries. From Afro-Surinamese and Indian roots to Javanese, Chinese, Indigenous, and European influences – this colorful mix makes Suriname unique. On the occasion of this milestone, we are organizing on November 25 an open conversation on three central and universal themes: identity, freedom, and the future, to reflect together on what independence means for everyone today.

We will conclude with a festive moment where we raise a glass, fully in Surinamese style, with lively music and delicious Surinamese treats.

Program November 25

16:15 Welcome by moderator Rudy van der Beek

16:20 Theme 1: Identity | Sahin Yildirim

Writer Sahin Yildirim invites visitors to an open conversation about a theme that touches everyone but is difficult to capture: identity. What determines who we are – and how does that change in the eyes of others? Identity is not fixed, but constantly evolving, shaped by our environment, history, and choices. In a world where boundaries are fading and images of “how we should be” are everywhere, Sahin engages the audience in a discussion about how identity arises, changes, and gives direction to our lives.

16:40 Theme 2: Freedom | Hanna Mitra Rambaran and Imaibell Pinas

Hanna Mitra and Imaibell Pinas speak about freedom in the context of 50 years of Surinamese independence. What does freedom mean regarding political autonomy, personal choices, and cultural expression? Drawing on the history of Suriname, they explore how freedom has been fought for, experienced, and sometimes limited. In a time of increasing polarization, they show what we can learn from a society where diversity and coexistence go hand in hand, and why it is important to continue sharing the untold stories.

17:05 Theme 3: The Future of Suriname | Rajendre Khargi

During the third theme, we look ahead with Rajendre Khargi, former ambassador of the Republic of Suriname to the Netherlands. Drawing on his diplomatic and social experience, he discusses the future of Suriname: how the country can further develop, the opportunities and challenges for governance and society, and the role that cooperation and the diaspora can play. The conversation also focuses on the vision and involvement of younger generations: how can they contribute to a just, connected, and resilient future for Suriname?
