The Young Hague City Photographers is an annual art project, the result of a collaboration between Nest and the Johan de Witt School Group. It offers fourth-year students of the Johan de Witt School Group the opportunity to explore The Hague in a different way, not just as a city, but as a place full of different people, cultures, and stories. Through photography, they capture their own perspective on the city and are given the opportunity to further connect with their everyday surroundings.
In the third edition (2025-2026) of the project, elementary and middle school students at the Johan de Witt Scholengroep explored The Hague from a new perspective, under the guidance of artists Esther Hovers and Sandim Mendes. Annika Breedveld and Rafaël Mendes Dias explored the technical side of photography, teaching them not only to master the camera but also motivating and supporting them while taking photos.
The project gave students a glimpse into the art of street photography, where technique and storytelling converge. While exploring the city with their cameras, the students asked themselves questions that helped them better understand their place in the city.
What does it mean to feel at home in The Hague? How do people relate to the city, and how is that expressed in the streets? What is visible, and what remains hidden? Is feeling represented the same for everyone?
Each student created their own subject for their photo series. For example, some students focused on the city's music, felt at home playing street football, saw the beauty in its monumental buildings, or felt a greater connection with run-down parts of the city.
To conclude the project, the students will present their work in an exhibition and a publication at The Hague Central Library. This way, they showcase their own perspective on the city and demonstrate how diverse and unique The Hague is.
