Friendship with a gazelle
A boy grows up on an island where he is the only human. His friend is a gazelle who is a perfect companion for him. He also befriends other animals on the island. Although he enjoys life there, he wonders how he ended up on the island. He sets off on a journey of discovery alone. Along the way, he reflects more deeply and begins to ask life’s big questions. How did life begin? What makes humans different from animals? What can we learn from nature? How can one be a good person? And above all, can he answer these questions? Suddenly, another man appears on the island and introduces him to the inhabited world—but he doesn’t like it at first!
Andalusian philosopher
The musical performance is based on the children’s book The Son of the Gazelle. Sabine Wassenberg and Kamel Essabane adapted the story from the famous 12th-century tale Hayy ibn Yaqzan, written by the Andalusian philosopher and scientist Ibn Tufayl. The Son of the Gazelle was named the Best Philosophical Children’s Book in 2022.
"With this storytelling performance, the Storytelling Centre and Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra imaginatively bring to life the music and stories from this golden age of Arab-Islamic culture." - Theaterkrant
