Fascism hollows out a democracy from within. It starts with language, not tanks. With democratic elections, not a coup. And it is given free rein, thanks to people who think it won't come to that – until suddenly it does. Like now.

During this evening, Rosan Smits, author of the book *This is Fascism*, will show what fascism actually is, how to recognize it in the Netherlands and the rest of the world, and what we can do about it.

Fascism is back. This time, no Nazi flags and swastikas, but ‘Make America Great Again’ caps and right-wing extremist memes. No ghettos and concentration camps, but manhunts for immigrants and inhumane detention centers.

It is crystal clear: US President Donald Trump is building a fascist regime. But the rise of fascism is not just an American problem. Fascism is back worldwide. For in Europe, too, politicians are rising up who hijack public debate with propaganda and, under the guise of “the will of the people,” declare minorities to be enemies.

But we do not have to follow this path. Fascism stands no chance if only there are enough people who understand: this is fascism.

The evening will be moderated by journalist Jos de Groot, presenter at Pointer (KRO-NCRV) and host of the podcast Veldheren (Corti Media).
