HIP-lecture: The Hague and slavery

  • Date: 30 April
  • Time: 10:00 - 11:00
  • Location: Bibliotheek Haagse Hout

On the traces and consequences of the colonial past.

Government City of The Hague

Walking through The Hague, you'll encounter traces of the history of slavery everywhere. Think of buildings like the former Ministry of Colonies, the many Indonesian and Surinamese restaurants, or street names like Javastraat and Tulapad. Many people associate the history of slavery in the Netherlands primarily with the trading city of Amsterdam or the port city of Middelburg, but The Hague played a central role in the establishment, maintenance, and abolition of slavery from the 17th century onward. Traces of this history are still visible in The Hague's streets.

HIP Lecture

During this HIP lecture, we'll take you along the locations that are part of the eponymous walk organized monthly by the Hague Historical Museum. While you remain comfortably seated, we'll view and discuss the places that recall this past together.
