KB-college: The role of women's magazines in women's emancipation

  • Date: 06 March
  • Time: 15:00 - 16:30
  • Location: KB, Club Erasmus

Please note: this is a Dutch-speaking event.

In this KB lecture, you'll learn more about the fascinating history of women's emancipation in the Netherlands. Using both well-known and lesser-known women's magazines, Cultural History Collection Specialist Channa Hoogervorst shows how these magazines evolved from housewives' guides to platforms that encouraged women to expand their horizons.

While the main topics in women's magazines like Libelle and Margriet remained the same for decades, the tone subtly shifted with the times. Themes such as work, independence, sexuality, and mental health gradually gained prominence. In this way, societal changes found their way not only onto the pages but also into the daily lives of readers.

With engaging examples and surprising insights, it becomes clear how major changes only truly take shape when they are discussed at the kitchen table. This lecture thus offers an accessible and inspiring look at the power of media in the development of Dutch women.

About the speaker:

Channa Hoogervorst studied social history and specialized in emancipation movements and their social impact. As a cultural history collection specialist at the Royal Library, her field of work is highly diverse, from popular culture to social change. By placing current themes in a historical context, she demonstrates how our view of ourselves and the world around us is constantly evolving.
