Shantie Singh — writer, theatre maker, columnist, storytelling fashionista, and creative public administrator, also known as a “glambtenaar” — will be the conversation guest of authors Sanne van Hassel and Iris Kater Mirsalari.
The writers’ collective Fixdit, of which Shantie Singh is a member, is committed to increasing the visibility of women in the literary world and the literary canon. In the Fixdit podcast Lange lijnen (“Long Lines”), authors from the collective discuss literary works written by women that have inspired them. With this podcast, Fixdit highlights the importance of major female writers for the development of contemporary literature.
This episode, featuring Shantie Singh, will be recorded during the Writers Unlimited Festival in front of a live audience. The conversation will later be available online as an episode of the Fixdit podcast series Lange lijnen.
About the guests
Shantie Singh
Shantie Singh is an author, programme maker, and moderator. Themes such as identity, diversity, women’s rights, and emancipation frequently take centre stage in her work. Her heritage is layered and connected to three continents: India, Suriname, and the Netherlands. She wrote about this in her debut novel Vervoering. This was followed by the novel De kier. In 2024, her non-fiction book Na de komma – Hindostanen en de erfenis van het kolonialisme was published, a plea for greater recognition and visibility of the Indo-Surinamese story in the Netherlands. Her theatre performance Her (s)tories (2024–2025), an ode to the women of Indo-Surinamese migration history, is based on this book.
Sanneke van Hassel
Sanneke van Hassel has written six short story collections (including Nederzettingen, 2019) and the novels Nest (2010) and Stille grond (2017). Van Hassel also writes non-fiction and is a strong advocate for the short story genre, including through her work with Annelies Verbeke, with whom she created the anthology Naar de stad.
