How Gaza and Jerusalem Also Determine Our Future

The Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, marked the start of a genocidal war in Gaza. By now, the entire Middle East is caught in a spiral of violence, from Iran to Lebanon and the Gulf States. Meanwhile, life for Palestinians is being made even more impossible through bombardments, annexation, humiliation, and the reintroduction of the death penalty. What happens next? What price are we paying for turning a blind eye? And why will the violence in the Middle East irrevocably change our society as well?

In Palestine and the West, Hizir Cengiz engages in conversation with Anna Krijger and Lotfi El Hamidi about the profound impact of the war in Gaza, both there and in the Netherlands. Through personal stories and sharp insights, Anna and Lotfi demonstrate why Palestine is also a determining factor for our future.

For due to the war there, everything here is shifting as well. While political support for Israel may remain undiminished, it is under pressure within society. Is our relationship with Israel being turned upside down? At the same time, a new, self-aware generation of Dutch people with a migration background is facing old suspicions and renewed rejections. How do Muslims view society now that ‘fighting in’ only leads to more discrimination? Palestine and the West makes it clear that the future of the Palestinians determines ours as well – whether we like it or not.

Anna Krijger is an Arabist and worked as a correspondent in Israel and the Palestinian territories. Her book *No Human Being in Gaza* was recently published.

Lotfi el Hamidi is a historian and editor at *de Groene Amsterdammer*. He was previously a columnist and Opinion Editor at NRC. His book *Sacks and Wolves* was recently published.
