Presentation of the NJR Exploration – The Future Takes Part in Governance

  • Date: 03 February
  • Time: 18:15 - 20:00
  • Location: Nieuwspoort

Young board members are an indispensable driving force behind youth organisations, advocacy groups, study and student associations, and local initiatives. At the same time, new figures show that interest in board positions has once again declined sharply. Financial insecurity, performance pressure, and restrictive education schedules make taking on a board year simply unfeasible for many young people.

For this reason, the National Youth Council (Nationale Jeugdraad – NJR) will present the exploration The Future Takes Part in Governance – Exploration of Young Board Members 2026 at Nieuwspoort on 3 February at 18:30. This exploration provides an up-to-date national overview of the socio-economic position of young board members, the influence of study costs and compensation on the decision to take on a board year, differences between types of education, and the effects of policy on civic engagement. It also puts forward recommendations to make board work more accessible. The exploration is explicitly intended as a call to policymakers to structurally strengthen the position of young board members.
