Slave Island
Directors: Jimmy Hendrickx, Jeremy Kewuan / Indonesia / Duration: 94 minutes

A cinematic documentary that exposes the existence of modern-day slavery on the Indonesian island of Sumba. While investigating a human trafficking case, local activist Jeremy Kewuan encounters a Maramba shaman who firmly believes in his ancestral right to own slaves. Amidst this, an enslaved 8-year-old girl comes into view. According to local tradition, the Ata people must serve the Maramba masters for generations and, after death, be buried alongside them.

With the help of a former slave and through countless confrontations with slave owners, tribal chiefs, and his own beliefs… Jeremy ultimately succeeds in fighting for the young girl’s freedom. A small victory in the ongoing struggle against human exploitation, even as the island’s Queen still owns hundreds of slaves who continue to wait for emancipation.
