Theatre for Palestine: This is the Situation

  • Date: 28 September
  • Time: 15:00 - 16:00
  • Location: Theater aan het Spui, Foyer

This is the Situation is a research-based performance. It is not an ordinary show, but an act of hope and connection. It is our response to the question: how do you keep dreaming in a world that constantly tries to break you?

The creators form an ad-hoc collective of Dutch and Palestinian theater makers who attempt to shape and tell stories about life in Gaza and the increasingly hardened Dutch society. In our work, we explicitly seek dialogue and connection through theatrical imagination and philosophical inquiry.

In this interactive session, you will follow a series of stories exploring what it means to be together, what it means when you cannot be together, and what being together truly entails. The piece includes excerpts from Ruh al Ruh (“Soul of My Soul”), written by Rafat Al Aydi (Gaza) last summer in a single day and night during the bombings in Gaza. It also incorporates voice messages shared between October 2023 and February 2024. In an open setting, the audience is invited to watch, experience, and reflect: How do you find a way toward each other?

Ruh al Ruh is dedicated to 21-year-old Marwan Al Namruoti, who died in Gaza in August 2024 during a bombing.

Theater for Palestine
This performance is part of a weekend-long program at Theater aan het Spui focused on Palestine. We give a platform to the voices and stories of Palestinian (and Dutch) theater makers, using theater as a space for solidarity, humanity, and hope.

All proceeds from ticket sales are donated, in collaboration with the creators, to the Palestinian Arts and Culture Solidarity Collective.
