Road to Summit, The Hague programme of Peace and Justice

Thinking about war & peace: Threatened Security

  • Date: 26 May
  • Time 19:30 - 21:00
  • Location: Club Erasmus in de KB nationale bibliotheek

In the run-up to the NATO summit on June 24-25 in The Hague, the KB is organizing three sessions on the broader theme of war and peace. The rapid developments surrounding NATO and European defense call for further exploration. In these sessions, we will place these developments in a historical context.

Guest speakers and KB collection specialists will join the audience in exploring a number of recurring themes in the long history of thinking about peace and war. What is peace? How can war be prevented? And when do we feel safe?

All sessions can be attended separately. There will be opportunities to ask questions during the sessions and at the drinks reception afterwards.

Session 3: Threatened security

The current geopolitical situation in the world is a source of great concern. Power relations seem to be shifting and old alliances are crumbling. The idea is that in order to maintain peace, we must prepare for war. But how sustainable is that idea? What is the background to NATO and the cooperation between the United States and Europe? Is there a new Cold War on the horizon? And what lessons can be learned from the past?

Professor of Global Economy and Geopolitics Bastiaan van Apeldoorn uses propositions and questions to explain the current geopolitical landscape and its historical roots. Throughout the evening, there will be opportunities for questions from the audience, which will be explored in greater depth and incorporated into the dialogue. Afterwards, there will be drinks to continue the conversation.
