Si vis pacem, para bellum (if you want peace, prepare for war) is an age-old proverb. You hear it a lot in the media again these days. But there is also a second variant: si vis pacem, para pacem (if you want peace, prepare for peace).
Dilemma
How do we prevent war and build peace? For centuries, people have been thinking about this. And always the same dilemma returns: do we invest in weapons and deterrence to ensure our security? Or in institutions that promote international cooperation and justice?
This exhibition introduces you to several key historical works from the KB collection that beautifully illustrate this dilemma. On the one hand, the often beautifully illustrated military tracts, pamphlets or media statements that testify to major changes in thinking about warfare and security. On the other hand, the tracts, pamphlets, novels and posters by peace thinkers and movements on universal values, justice and nonviolent resistance.
