Lieflijk Indië - exhibition
- Date:
- Location: Museum Sophiahof
Starting 8 November, Museum Sophiahof in The Hague presents the exhibition Lieflijk Indië – a series of striking portraits of residents and visitors of the eponymous residential community in Haarlem. The exhibition is filled with memories, traditions, and a sense of community within the Indo-Dutch community in the Netherlands.
A moving exhibition
In Lieflijk Indië, 19 residents and visitors are portrayed, each sharing a unique life story. Their experiences reflect a generation that navigated life with resilience and determination after difficult times. The exhibition explores questions such as:
-
How has history shaped their lives?
-
Who have they become in the Netherlands?
-
Which Indo-Dutch traditions, customs, and knowledge do they wish to pass on to future generations?
Listen to personal stories
Accompanying each portrait is the voice of the person portrayed. Their words bring the past to life and provide an intimate insight into Indo-Dutch heritage. Immerse yourself in their stories of identity, memory, and connection.
Book and initiative
The exhibition is based on the book Lieflijk Indië, which compiles the same portraits and stories. The project is an initiative of the Stichting Indische Ouderen Raad Haarlem (SIOH) – an organization dedicated to supporting Indo-Dutch elders and everyone connected to Indo-Dutch culture.
