Our Land - Decolonisation, generations, stories

  • Date: 04 June - 31 July
  • Location: Museum Sophiahof

The semi-permanent exhibition OUR LAND – Decolonization, Generations, Stories, showcases Dutch colonial history in the East and its continuing impact. Eyewitnesses to that history and their descendants share their stories.

Currently, approximately two million people with a special connection to the former Dutch East Indies live in the Netherlands. They or their ancestors came to the Netherlands after the proclamation of the Republic of Indonesia. It was the largest wave of migration ever. Some of them believed their stay here would be temporary.

The voices of eight families form the core of Our Land. These personal and diverse, yet recognizable stories for many, offer a glimpse into the complex postcolonial history and how differently it was and is experienced. The family stories in Our Land begin in the present. From there, they lead us back into the colonial past. The exhibition concludes back in the present.

Our Land is not neutral; the story is incomplete and unfinished. It is a snapshot in an ongoing process of awareness.

NEW: Youth Audio Tour OUR COUNTRY

We've added an audio tour to our permanent exhibition OUR COUNTRY: Decolonization, Generations, Stories. The audio tour is accessible and therefore suitable for young people and anyone unfamiliar with this topic.
