Storytelling evening: (family) histories of descendants of contract workers in Suriname

  • Date: 13 November
  • Time: 17:30 - 20:30
  • Location: Dienstencentrum Copernicus

On Thursday evening, November 13th, Haags Verhaal is organizing a storytelling evening at the Copernicus service center with descendants of contract laborers in Suriname. People from the Hindustani, Surinamese-Javanese, and Surinamese-Chinese communities will share their (family) histories. This event will be taking place in Dutch.

Tens of thousands of indentured laborers came to Suriname in the nineteenth century from the former British India, the Dutch East Indies, and China to work on the plantations—as an alternative to slave labor. However, they were paid very little, had little freedom, and the conditions were extremely poor. Indentured labor was a form of slavery.

Our guests are Hariëtte Mingoen, Harish Madho, and Bernice Tjien A Fat. They will discuss the history of Javanese, Hindustani, and Chinese contract workers, respectively, and share personal stories from their families. They will also discuss the impact of these stories on the present day.
